Central Market York
There’s nothing quite like coming home and after almost a year of being away, I was overdue for a visit. (Yeah, I don’t know how I went a year without visiting when home is only 2 and a half hours away.)
ANYWHO. As I’m sure all of you have your favorite spots that you HAVE to visit while you’re home, I have my usual plan of attack. Atop that list is always Central Market York.
Located at 34 W Philadelphia Street York, PA 17401 are the 125-year-old giant green doors to the Central Market York. If I’m back in town on a market day, you know I’m there …. just ask my parents who I drag along with me (so they can pay). It’s the combination of the historic building, live music and the ability to stroll up and down the aisles while sipping on a fresh coffee that makes it feel like home. When it’s an overdue visit like this one, it’s exciting to see what’s new not only in the market but downtown York. Of course, while I was young and lived there is was ugghhh now it’s all up and coming with cute boutiques and cafes. Opened Tuesday & Thursday 7 am- 2 pm and Saturday 6 am- 2 pm, market has over 50 + vendors- to note a few of my favorites... Gigi’s Crepes, Corner Cabinet, AND my all-time I crave it 24/7 and I just wish they could live in my kitchen favorite… The Copper Crust Company.
I was more than likely late to the game in discovering The Copper Crust. I was late to the whole market scene in general. But those lost years have been made up for with frequent visits and large consumptions of food upon every visit. At The Copper Crust Company, Chefs Sean and Nicole Austin create authentic handmade pastries and baked goods using rich butter, natural ingredients and the quality of local, farm-to-table freshness. At market, they have a cute little stand in the corner taunting me with fresh baked cakes, pastries, pies, buns, cookies...it takes some real personal self-control to not get everything. They also have a full menu of brunch like items and sandwiches. I always dine in, mainly because I don't have the patience to wait until I get home to enjoy it. Attached to their stand is somewhat of a makeshift antique chic dining area- eat in. It's small but on a lucky day not super packed, and (my favorite part) you’re basically sitting in the kitchen (you know I love that, so I can watch them make all their amazing items and nearly lose all self-control).
I get the same thing every time…. EVERY TIME. I rely on whoever I’m with to get something different so that I can taste and experience the other items on the menu without being ripped away from my copper love… The House Cured and Smoked Bacon Biscuit Benedict. PLEASE, Copper Crust chefs just move into my apartment and make me this every morning! The title pretty much gives it away but it’s two fluffy biscuits topped with two poached eggs, bacon, and avocado sauce. On the side, you get greens with fruit and hominy. (Hold up googling hominy now because it’s amazing but idk what it is.) Okay. Hominy is like a grit. Whatever it’s damn good!
My mother got The Brie and Mushroom Shepherd’s Pie. Brie cheese is life, I take a liking to mushrooms, and well a warm flakey golden-brown pie crust has never heard no from me. It was very very good. Something different and filling and worth another visit to get.
If you ever find yourself in good ole York, PA on a market day, you friend are in for a treat!
